Setting

The story is set in a world where demons (悪魔, akuma) are born from human fear. However, individuals called Devil Hunters (デビルハター, Debiru Hanta) specialize in hunting and employing them. The events take place in 1997, in an alternate timeline where the Soviet Union still exists, and many events such as the Holocaust, AIDS, and nuclear weapons have been erased from history due to the Chainsaw Devil's consumption of their respective devils, leaving only four powerful devils. Those known as the Horsemen (Control, War, Famine and Death) are recounting the events. Humans can make contracts with devils through sacrifice, allowing them to harness the devil's power. Even devils can become demons by taking possession of a human dead body. When a devil is killed on Earth, he appears again in Hell, and if he is killed in Hell, he is reborn in a new body on Earth.

Plot

Part 1 - The Public Safety Saga

Read Chainsaw Man Manga

When his father died, Denji was deeply in debt and had no way to repay it. Thanks to a devil dog named Pochita, whom he rescued, he is able to survive by doing odd jobs and killing devils for the Yakuza. Pochita's chainsaw powers come in handy against these powerful monsters. When the Yakuza betray him and he is killed by the Zombie Devil, Pochita sacrifices himself to save his former boss. Denji is then reborn as a devil-human hybrid known as Chainsaw Man.

After his transformation, now that he is technically a devil, he is quickly recruited by Makima to join the Public Security Devil Hunters under the threat of extermination. Now that he is living comfortably for the first time in his life, Denji struggles to determine his dreams and form meaningful relationships while killing Devils and working with other eccentric Devil Hunters.

Part 2 - Academy Saga

Read Chainsaw Man Manga

Following the death of her mother, Fourth East highschooler Asa Mitaka isolates herself from society, fearing that she would never lead a stable normal life. Her life changes forever when one day, a student in contract with the Justice Devil kills her, Yoru the War Devil arrives, saving her. Now Asa has been reborn as the War Devil's vessel while sharing her abilities as a Fiend Host.

Upon her awakening, she's forcefully pulled into Yoru's quest of vengeance to the Chainsaw Man while having aimed to reclaim the Nuclear Weapons Devil from him. Aiming to separate from Yoru as quickly as possible, Asa goes on a quest to locate and investigate the Chainsaw Man and mysteries around her school while meeting new friends and foes alike.

Meanwhile, sometime after leaving the Public Safety, Denji has now started to go to high school, while he also continues to exterminate devils. He still wishes to get a girlfriend and often tries to "accidentally" expose his identity as the Chainsaw Man.

Rumours..

The remainder of the story is much better than what season 1 covered. Season 2 is going to be the point where people start understanding the hype. I promise you. What has been covered is the weakest part of the story.

I don't know what any of yal are talking about. So far the show has been good. The animation looks amazing, and they're sticking pretty true to the Manga aside from cutting a chapter. If you didn't like the Manga then idk why you're trying to watch the show. And if you did like the Manga idk how you couldn't like the show so far. There's literally not a thing wrong with it, like at all.

So I decided to check out Chainsaw Man when it came out and have finished episode three, it comes down to personal taste of course but it doesn't seem to be as hype as people are making it out to be, am I alone in thinking this or do some people agree? For example, great character, I just wish he wasn't the typical 'I need boobas' type of character.

It was a decent watch. The MC is by far my favorite character, how the goals he sets for himself are so simple yet just as important to him as anyone else's goals. And for good reason, he's had a shitty life and has never been able to live for himself up until now. I'd say a bit more but it would be somewhat spoiling.

The anime actually kinda made me realize something about myself, that I need to live for myself more and that I should start setting goals for myself to achieve. To find purpose in life rather than just living for the sake of living.

Hey, just wondering if ChainSaw Man is worth a watch? I’m fan of anime like FMAB, One Punch Man, Cowboy Bepop and PsychoPass. Have never really enjoyed the more classic shounen stuff but this has been popping up a lot lately so wondered if it’s worth jumping into or is it a run of the mill shounen type of thing which I don’t think I’d be a huge fan of.

Everyone is going to have a different opinion. Watch it for yourself and decide.
