Solo Leveling (나 혼자만 레벨업, Na Honjaman Lebel-eob) “Solo Leveling Manhwa” or “Solo Leveling Manga” is a Korean webtoon series written by Chu-Gong and illustrated by Gi Si-Ryeong and Jang Su-Rak.

“The Gate” arose ten years ago, bridging the gap between the actual world and the domain of magic and monsters. Ordinary humans were given superhuman abilities and were known as “Hunters” in order to confront these heinous animals. Sung Jin-Woo, a twenty-year-old Hunter, is renowned as the “World’s Weakest” due to his pitiful power when compared to even a meager E-Rank. Despite this, he continues to hunt monsters in low-rank Gates to help pay for his mother’s medical expenditures.

However, Jin-terrible Woo’s life changes three days later when he awakens in a hospital to find a weird screen floating in front of him, believing himself to be the only one left to die in a mission gone horribly wrong. This “Quest Log” requires Jin-Woo to accomplish an unrealistic and rigorous training regimen.

Synopsis

Solo Leveling

10 years ago, after “the Gate” that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some of the ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as “Hunters”. However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter. I’m someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of dungeons, the “World’s Weakest”. Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled dungeons… at least until I found a hidden dungeon with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank dungeons! In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise. Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!

Rurmors....

There is a lot of hype around it because the manhwa adaptation of the novel series has some of the most amazing art that has ever been done in a medium like this, so a ton of people either read the series or at least knows about it. The story itself is a pretty generic power fantasy but has a lot of badass moments if you are into that kind of stuff.

It's basically In-N-Out. Decently good fast food, but at the end of the day it's still fast food.

The best way I can describe it is generic done right. The manwha knows it has the rule of cool going for it, so it just rolls with it and never really strays.

I personally enjoy it, and I'm sure most would too. If you go in expecting amazing writing then you're going to be disappointed, it's at it core a basic power fantasy. Try not buy into the hype too much. If you go in expecting the fast food equivalent of anime, you'll probably have a good time.

Is it good?

short answer: No

Long answer: It's not good, but depending on what you are looking for, it might be worth it. No side characters, bad plot, all it has going for it is it's god tier visuals and character design. Considering it's A1 Pictures and Sawano, I'm sure it should be good enough in the first 3 or 4 episodes. It's faults won't be apparent until midway through the 1st season for most people anyway. If they end it where I think they should end it, it will probably end on a good note reception-wise.

No character other than the MC does anything relevant, or get any development at all , and they never stay in the story for more rhan 10 chapters. Excep the main chick who does nothing at all but at least gets screentime.

It's an extreme version of a power fantasy isekai, for better and for the worst.

I noticed that Solo Leveling and TBATE both have lots of POVs from people watching the MC fight, bystanders talking in street about what MC recently accomplished, civilians watching the news, classmates in the stands, newscaster in the helicopter, etc.

They are always stunned, heart racing, tears filling their eyes, pride overwhelming their chests.

EDIT I'm dumb thought this was talking about Solo Leveling

The art is really good. One of its main selling points imo. The story starts off interesting but gets generic fairly quickly. Then the ending was offensively bad.

But if you just want some hype action and a story that actually finishes, this is here.

Honestly, I find it kind of cringe these days. It's Gary Stu story-telling at max levels. Especially hate how loads of characters are regularly introduced as "The Best X," display a cartoonish level of overconfidence in their own ability, then get squashed just to make the main character look more badass by proxy. It's just so lazy, cliché, and disappointing.

It has good art and action, but none of the characters or story were memorable. I literally have no impression of other characters in the sorry good or bad. I forget if the main character even has a particular fighting style. That said I still enjoyed reading it up whatever was current 3 years ago. To me it's going to be another visual feast like Demon Slayer, just edgier.
